Laser vs CNC engraving
Customers often ask which machine should mark their trophy plate, plaque, or knife. Both are engraving. They are not interchangeable. Here is how we choose at Prestige Trophies in Bayswater North.
What laser engraving does well
Our fiber laser marks metal with heat, not a cutting tool. That makes it the right job for stainless steel, brass plates, coated metals, and most knife engraving — names, logos, serials, and fine artwork that has to stay sharp at small sizes.
Laser marking is fast, repeatable, and clean on a batch of identical nameplates or medals. Depth is shallow compared with a CNC cut. If you need a dark fill on a gold plate, we will tell you whether paint-fill after laser (or a different plate) will read better across a hall.

What CNC engraving does well
CNC (computer-controlled rotary engraving) physically cuts the surface. That is why it still wins on many wood plaques, plastic laminates, and jobs that need a visible groove you can feel. Complex outlines and deeper lettering on traditional award plates often look better cut than flashed with a laser.
CNC is slower per piece than laser on a long list of tiny stainless tags. It is the better tool when the material would not mark cleanly with a fiber laser, or when the design is meant to have depth.

Which should you ask for?
Bring the item — or a clear photo of the surface. Metal knives and stainless tags are almost always laser. Many classic trophy plates can be either; we pick the process that will still be readable in ten years, not just on the day it leaves Gaine Court.
